Description

This interactive workshop explores (inter)cultural learning through encounters with difference. It begins with examining our understanding of intercultural difference and how historic power dynamics lay the foundation for many of our interactions and relationships today. Such a (dis)comforting experience, is centered on interstitiality (Bhabha, 1994), and understanding curriculum as lived (Aoki, 2005). Through the use of exercises, we explore how to recognize (dis)comfort, shift power and reframe our encounters with each other, as well as, taking steps to advancing equity in our classrooms and systems. Illuminating the pedagogical dynamics of (dis)comfort, illuminates complexities and nuances in (inter)cultural learning while offering new curricular possibilities in study abroad.
