In fall 2021, a sharp rise in media stories and published reports drew widespread attention to stories of exploitation, hardship, and anxiety faced by international students in Canada, and cast a negative light on Sheridan, brewing community conflict and division in the City of Brampton and surrounding Region of Peel. We undertook an 18-month project to establish a community roundtable in Brampton, host a summit, and co-create a community charter to enhance the international student experience. Our efforts galvanized disparate stakeholders around a shared vision and collective action plan, dispelled dangerous myths, and generated appreciation for each other’s contributions. Our efforts have rallied the community to support international students, deepened trust, and fostered harmony. Join this interactive session to learn more about how an ecosystem came together through collective action to tackle this challenge, and be prepared to apply these learnings during the session to map out where this approach might help you tackle a similarly complex “wicked” challenge in your ecosystems.
