This session explores a groundbreaking government-funded initiative that delivers over 700+ work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities tailored to international students. Led by the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Centre for Experiential and Career Education in partnership with Wayble, we’ll address the critical need for career development support in a policy and job market landscape where international students often lack dedicated federal funding.
Through this session, participants will gain insights into the development and implementation of both curricular and co-curricular WIL models designed specifically for international students. We will highlight UFV’s four innovative curricular WIL programs, which integrate skill training, platform learning, and industry expert mentorship within the classroom. Additionally, we will showcase the Career Pathway Program, a free initiative that connects students with short-term industry projects, weekly mentorship, and career development resources. The program engages 50+ businesses, 50+ industry mentors, including TELUS-sponsored professionals and CACEE, which provides employer training workshops. This session will provide best practices, key lessons, and testimonials from employers, mentors, and students, offering a scalable model for institutions seeking to enhance career support for international students beyond traditional co-op and internship programs. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to develop WIL initiatives that empower international students to successfully transition into the Canadian workforce.
