Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. BCCIE is offering this course in partnership with Wellness & Learning Initiatives by

Course participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis
  • Have conversations that encourage a person to:
    • Talk about declines in their mental well-being
    • Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
    • Reach out to these supports
    • Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
    • Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being

Course Topics

Module 1: Self-Directed

  • Introduction to the course
  • Introduction to MHFA Actions

Module 2: Virtual Classroom

  • Practice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being
  • Guidelines for MHFA conversations with people from diverse cultures and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community

Module 3: Virtual Classroom

  • Discussion on using MHFA actions for self-care
  • Practice using MFHA actions in crisis situations

Course Timeline and Important Information


  • Course registration closes on Wednesday, January 10.
  • Module 1 (self-directed) links will be sent to participants by Wednesday, January 17, and this module must be completed by Wednesday, January 31.
  • Module 2 (virtual classroom) will take place on Tuesday, February 6, from 1pm - 5pm PT.
  • Module 3 (virtual classroom) will take place on Tuesday, February 13, from 1pm - 5pm PT.

Important Course Information:

  • This course requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 15 participants. 
  • A certificate from the self-directed module will need to be sent to the course instructor to participate in the virtual classroom.
  • The virtual classrooms are live sessions and not recordings. Please ensure you are available for both sessions prior to registering for the course.
