Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. BCCIE is offering this course in partnership with Wellness & Learning Initiatives by guard.me.
You will learn how to
- Recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis
- Have conversations that encourage a person to:
- Talk about declines in their mental well-being
- Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
- Reach out to these supports
- Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
- Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being
Course Topics
Module 1: Self-Directed
- Introduction to the course
- Introduction to MHFA Actions
Module 2: Virtual Classroom
- Practice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being
- Guidelines for MHFA conversations with people from diverse cultures and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community
Module 3: Virtual Classroom
- Discussion on using MHFA actions for self-care
- Practice using MFHA actions in crisis situations

Course Timeline
- Course registration closes on Wednesday, January 10.
- Module 1 (self-directed) links will be sent to participants by Wednesday, January 17, and this module must be completed by Wednesday, January 31.
- Module 2 (virtual classroom) will take place on Tuesday, February 6, from 1pm - 5pm PT.
- Module 3 (virtual classroom) will take place on Tuesday, February 13, from 1pm - 5pm PT.

- This course requires a minimum of 8 participants and has a maximum of 15 participants.
- A certificate from the self-directed module will need to be sent to the course instructor to participate in the virtual classroom.
- The virtual classrooms are live sessions and not recordings. Please ensure you are available for both sessions prior to registering for the course.
