Description

International students in Canada have a complex mix of marginalized identities, often being “othered” in their new Canadian environment. This workshop provides participants with practical knowledge of key concepts and ideas that support a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive (EDI) environment. We will discuss some of the core considerations of EDI and explore different ways to connect mindfully with underrepresented and/or marginalized individuals. Participants will also examine their role in effectively addressing harmful behaviours and situations. In addition to individual reflection on their engagement in EDI, participants will learn about the University of Victoria’s institutional journey to centering voices from systemically and historically marginalized groups in its effort to identify systemic barriers and to launch its first equity action plan. This workshop is participatory and calls on participants to share thoughts and ideas to their comfort level.
