Key Dates

BCCIE’s role in contributing to environmental sustainability extends far beyond BCIEW, but we have narrowed in on several key ways to further our commitment to our planet during the conference:

  • In preparation for BCIEW 2024, we are refraining from printing whenever possible.
  • We have optimized our website and mobile app to give you an easy and efficient digital experience, making paper unnecessary.
  • We are not using plastic sleeves around name badges to limit plastic waste.
  • Our hotel key cards will be made from wood to reduce single use plastics.
  • We have decided, once again, to make Monday, June 24, Meatless Monday to help reduce the carbon footprint impact of the conference.

The JW Marriott Parq Vancouver has earned Gold standards from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and is also Green Key Eco-Rating Program Certified.

  • The JW Marriott is taking steps in their guest rooms to conserve water and energy use by implementing water restrictions on showers and taps and by ensuring fans return to default temperatures after a period of time. Motion activated lights are also used to help conserve energy.
  • The JW Marriott’s culinary team has partnered with Vancouver Food Runners to redirect surplus food to non-profits. In 2023, they provided the equivalent of 11,596 meals to the community.
  • In meeting spaces, the JW Marriott opts to write food names and dietary restrictions directly onto the food stations and uses reusable glass bottles, helping reduce their use of plastic and paper.

Our delegates can also play a vital role in contributing to environmental sustainability at BCIEW 2024. Here’s how:

  • Consider taking public transportation or carpooling with others to reduce your carbon footprint. We also invite you to share your eco-friendly travel experiences on social media using the hashtag #TravelwithCANIE.
  • Reuse! Bring a reusable water bottle and coffee mug to reduce the number of plastic bottles and single-use cups.
  • Get vocal! In programming around climate action and sustainability, share your thoughts, and encourage others to think critically on these topics throughout BCIEW 2024 and into the future.
  • If you are a sponsor or exhibitor, we encourage you to drastically reduce the amount of swag you distribute, or even better, not have any. Swag is often wasted and ends up in landfills, leading to negative environmental impacts.
  • While at our host venues, please comply with all recycling and waste disposal signage.
