Professor Wiremu Doherty

Professor Wiremu Doherty is the Chief Executive Officer of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. He has vast experience in leadership roles within education and community development. He was appointed Chair of Ngā Kaitūhono by the Minister of Education to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority Board; Chair of Toi, Economic Development Agency; and, co-chair of the Tertiary Education Commissions Sector Reference Group for the Performance Research Based Funding (PBRF) allocation.
Recently Professor Doherty completed a significant paper with the New Zealand Law Commission regarding traditional knowledge inclusion into New Zealand’s state law. His PhD research focused on the importance of Indigenous knowledge inclusion in education. With his strong connection to his Tūhoe and Ngāti Awa heritage, Professor Doherty leads Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in providing quality education nationally and internationally at all academic levels.
