Description

The escalating climate emergency has brought sustainability to the forefront of global concerns, affecting various sectors, including international mobility. As our sector increasingly focuses on sustainable forms of mobility, we have witnessed a surge in funding frameworks at institutional, national and international levels dedicated to promoting greener practices. However, it is imperative to question whether this positive shift towards 'green student mobility' inadvertently hinders student outreach and inclusion. The main objective of this session is to identify the potential challenges and implications of (over)focusing on sustainable practices in international student mobility and the negative impact this can have on outreach and inclusion efforts. What practical steps can we take in our own institutions to promote both sustainability and inclusion agendas equally? Green yes, but not mean!

Learning Outcomes
  • Identify the key factors and funding frameworks contributing to the rise of "green student mobility."
  • Assess the extent to which the emphasis on sustainability affects the accessibility and inclusivity of mobility programs for diverse student populations.
  • Draw up an action plan to ensure that sustainability goals align with and enhance student outreach and inclusion.
