Name
Who Gets In? Rethinking Immigration Advising Practices (CPD Approved)
Date
Monday, June 22, 2026
Time
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM (PDT)
Description

This session has been approved for 1.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).

As immigration advisers in Canada, we work within an immigration system structured and restructured to advance Canada’s economic interests and national priorities. Policies and decision-making within this system can sometimes disproportionately disadvantage applicants based on many factors, including citizenship, age, economic status, and cultural background.

Applicants face the scrutiny of who will comply and who will not, who is credible and who is questionable, who belongs temporarily and who will stay permanently. These decisions are often shaped by Western standards and worldviews. As Immigration Advisers, how do we show up in a good way, ensuring integrity and caring support as students navigate the Canadian immigration system?

In this session, we will engage in discussions using student case scenarios. These conversations will support the development of advising approaches that remain accurate and compliant with IRPA, IRPR, and policy guidance, while critically accounting for the lived experiences of students moving through the system.

Learning Outcomes
  • Recognize how systemic inequities shape immigration policies and influence decision-making.
  • Develop equity-informed and student-centered advising approaches.
  • Enhance awareness of advocacy and relationship building within our advising practices.
