Description

This session explores how post-secondary institutions can develop and renew academic programs that are both academically strong and meaningfully connected to industry and workforce realities. Drawing on experience within British Columbia’s quality assurance and program development context, the presentation will share practical approaches to designing programs that respond to labour-market demand while remaining grounded in institutional mission, educational values, and student success. Participants will consider how institutions can move beyond occasional employer input toward more intentional and sustained forms of engagement. The session will examine how labour-market intelligence, employer consultation, and community partnerships can inform program concept development, curriculum design, learning outcomes, and work-integrated learning opportunities. It will also highlight the role of Program Advisory Committees and other structured mechanisms that help translate external insight into relevant, high-quality academic planning. Along the way, the presentation will address a key tension facing many institutions: how to create programs that are responsive and career-connected without becoming overly reactive to short-term market shifts. Attention will be given to balancing responsiveness with academic integrity, quality assurance expectations, and the broader responsibility of higher education to prepare adaptable, ethical, and globally aware graduates. Designed for academic leaders, curriculum developers, and quality assurance professionals, this session offers practical examples, strategic questions, and actionable ideas for building industry-focused programs that are credible, sustainable, and future-oriented.
