Date
Tuesday, June 23, 2026
Time
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM (PDT)
Description

The Global and Intercultural Skills Certificate Program was introduced as a pilot initiative for BC high schools in 2015 by the BC Ministry of Education. Various school districts across the province developed models for program delivery. The model that Central Okanagan Public Schools developed has proven successful and offers the program as an elective option for both domestic and international students.

This session will outline the model used in Central Okanagan, key benefits, and curriculum resources, as well as discuss how the program has been integrated into international student program initiatives, including homestay programs. Examples of collaboration between the international student program, Indigenous department, and global and intercultural skills program teaching staff will also be shared highlighting ways the district is supporting intercultural competency development as well as Truth and Reconciliation.

Participants will have the opportunity to review and discuss the district developed curriculum resource and will gain insight into how the program aligns with the district strategic plan and supports the provincial K-12 anti-racism framework. Attendees will leave with practical ideas and resources that can be adapted and applied to complement an existing program or to support the development of new initiatives for strengthening explicit intercultural learning for all students.
