This session has been approved for 1 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hour by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).
As Canada’s immigration programs place growing emphasis on skilled work experience, international student advisors are uniquely positioned to help students align their post-graduation work permit planning with long-term immigration goals. This interactive session introduces a strategic pathway: applying for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) from outside of Canada to gain one year of foreign skilled work experience. The deferral of post-graduation work permit activation with a simultaneous period of foreign skilled work experience can significantly boost a graduate’s eligibility for permanent residence through IRCC’s Express Entry system.
Through a facilitated roundtable discussion with real-world case scenarios, participants will explore how time spent working abroad can increase competitiveness in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), especially for students who don’t yet meet Canadian Experience Class (CEC) criteria. Together, we’ll unpack policy considerations, review IRCC guidance, and examine advising strategies that balance opportunity with risk. Advisors will leave with a deeper understanding of PGWP application logistics from abroad, key eligibility factors, and practical tools to guide students in making informed, immigration-aligned career decisions — even beyond Canada’s borders.
