Name
Mind the Gap: Aligning English Proficiency Across Study, Work, and Professional Futures

Description

As Canada’s international education system continues to prioritize learner mobility, flexible pathways, and long-term student success, English-language proficiency plays a critical — and often under-examined — role. While English proficiency requirements enable international students to access post-secondary education, these entry-level thresholds do not always align with the language demands students later face in professional licensure, regulated occupations, employment, or immigration.

This misalignment can create unintended barriers for students who successfully complete their studies but encounter challenges transitioning into work or professional practice. For institutions and pathway providers, it raises important questions about how admissions standards, advising practices, and student supports align with learners’ full educational and professional trajectories.

This session speaks directly to BC International Education Week’s focus on student success, mobility, and cross-sector collaboration. By examining the gap between academic English requirements and post-study language expectations, participants will explore how international education practitioners can better support students’ long-term goals — from education to employment and community contribution. The session invites educators, administrators, and sector leaders to consider how more transparent, evidence-based approaches to English proficiency can strengthen pathways and improve outcomes for international learners in Canada.

Learning Outcomes
  • Learn how institutions can integrate long-term English-proficiency planning into admissions, advising, and pathway design.
  • Discuss what role international education practitioners can play in advocating for clearer, more consistent language standards across education and employment sectors.
  • Explore best practices in test equivalency, regulator alignment, and post-study language support.
