Bio
Sara is mixed blood Kwagu’ł from Northern Vancouver Island. She holds a M.Ed. specializing in Indigenous Language Revitalization. Sara’s passion is grounded in her view that Indigenous languages are vital to achieving the Calls to Action of Reconciliation and the full implementation of the United Nations Declaration of Rights for Indigenous People. Sara has been instrumental in many transformative changes at NIC, in her roles as Indigenous Education facilitator, faculty, and research lead. Her latest contribution, working closely with partner institute Kapi’olani College in Oahu, provided a changing tide to education at NIC, by shifting the direction of our journey to examine what it means to become truly, “Indigenous Serving.” Sara shares, “Reconciliation requires that we be willing to decolonize and free ourselves from the structures, policies, and practices that have and will continue to impede Indigenous equity in the true sense of the word across our academy. If we are willing, exploring what it means to be Indigenous serving and accelerating our commitments to ReconciliAction will change us in transformative ways that we cannot currently predict. Achieving true equity and unity must be our driving force. O’man’s ‘Nam’a: We are One”
